Belgium’s merchandise trade deficit for March narrowed from a year ago as strong export growth offset a fall in imports, preliminary figures from the National Bank of Belgium showed Monday.

The visible trade deficit fell to EUR 0.1 billion from EUR 0.9 billion in the same month last year. In February, the trade balance swung to a surplus of EUR 0.9 billion from EUR 0.4 billion deficit a year ago.

Exports rose 2.9 percent year-on-year, driven by a 5.7 percent surge in the shipments to the EU. Dispatches to non-EU region declined 3.4 percent.

Imports dropped 0.7 percent annually as arrivals from the EU dropped 4 percent, while those from non-EU countries grew 7.6 percent.
