Box Office: ‘War Room’ Outperforms, ‘Compton” Fades, ‘Friends’ DOA

‘Friends’ suffers the worst opening of all time for a Hollywood studio title going out in 2,000 or more theaters; Christian drama ‘War Room’ rejoices in opening to $11-M from only 1,135 theaters to place #2.

The Dog Days of August saw Universal’s, a unit of Comcast (NASDAQ:CMCSA) box-office champ ‘Compton’ remain #1 for the 3rd straight weekend with $13.2-M from 3,142 theaters, while Christian drama ‘War Room’ did far better than expected in earning $11-M from a small opening at 1,135 locations to come in 2nd.

Zac Efron’s electronic dance music drama ‘We Are Your Friends’  debuted to a grim $1.8-M from 2,333 locations, the worst opening of all time for a new major studio offering opening in 2,000 or more theaters. ‘We Are Your Friends’, directed by Max Joseph placed 13th or 14th. The film earned a C+ CinemaScore from audiences.

Straight Outta Compton finished Sunday with a domestic total of $134.1-M in the latest victory for Universal, which is enjoying the biggest year in history of any Hollywood studio at the global box office.

Terminator: Genisys that won the weekend overseas thanks to its run in China, where it grossed $23.4-M for an 8ht-day take of $82.8-M. The film has jumped the $300-M mark internationally for a foreign take of $320.1-M and global box office total of $409.5-M.

Paramount’s, a unit of Viacon (NASDAQ:VIA) ‘MI—Rogue Nation’ jumped the $300-M mark overseas, earning $15.3-M from 64 markets for a foreign box office take of $309-M and a global total of $479.9-M. Paramount partnered with Skydance on both Mission: Impossible and Terminator: Genisys.

In North America

‘War Room’ marked a needed win for Sony (NYSE:SNE). It is the #1 debut for a faith-based title since Heaven Is for Real ($22.5-M) in April 2014. Sony released the movie via its faith-based TriStar/Affirm label. The film got an A+ CinemaScore and cost $3-M to make.

Among the weekend’s other new entires

The Weinstein Co.’s political action-thriller ‘No Escape’, earning a B+ CinemaScore, grossed $8.3-M from 3,355 locations, tying with ‘MI—Rogue Nation’ for the # 3 spot. The film posted a 5-day debut of $10.3-M after opening Wednesday to get a jump on the competition.

Focus Features’ Sinister 2, fell 56% in its 2nd frame to $4.7-M for a total $18.5-M, rounded out the Top 5.The Man from U.N.C.L.E. followed with $4.4-M in its 3rd frame for a soft domestic box office total of $34.1-M.

Hitman: Agent 47 fell 54% in its 2nd weekend, grossing $3.9% for a weak 10-day box office take of $15.3-M for Fox (NASDAQ:FOX).

Jurassic World rolled out again in 350 Imax (NYSE:IMAX) locations over the weekend, taking in $3.1-M. That puts the blockbuster’s domestic total at roughly $643.1-M.

At the specialty box office

The debut of Craig Zobel’s film adaptation of Robert C. O’Brien’s dystopian novel Z for Zachariah, starring Chiwetel Eijofor, Chris Pine and Margot Robbie. Roadside Attractions opted for a day-and-date release in 31 theaters and on VOD, reporting theatrical grosses of roughly $56,000 (the movie is No. 6 on iTunes).
