British Prime Minister David Cameron has headed to his last European Union leaders’ summit in Brussels today, where he will urge his European partners to rethink the approach of the European Union. Lots of clarity are expected from this summit. Mr. Cameron is likely to face rebuke from many European partners for endangering the future of the Union with his political gamble but more than anything they will ask for clarity over Britain’s next Prime Minister.
He is expected to urge the leaders to make the best of the current situation and to strike a deal, good for both since it is in the best interest of both Britain and the Union to have that. He is likely to find some ally when he asks the leaders to pause the relentless move towards a greater integration. Latest survey by Pew Research center, done on 10 countries of the European Union, which includes Germany, Italy, Spain, Greece, and France shows that almost 42 percent of the survey respondents want some powers to be returned from Brussels to national government, 27 percent rejected the idea of more integration, whereas only 19 percent supported such a goal.
This summit will provide clarity on how the leaders are likely to approach in future. It’s a two-day summit, beginning today.
