Please don’t shout Brexit. At least not yet. It is not we, who asks you to do that but history urges so. Historically speaking, this is not the first referendum that has shocked the European Union.

A few months back, in a Dutch referendum, people of Netherlands rejected the European Union’s relation with the Ukraine. Go back a little further and you will find far more shocking referendums. In 1992 the Danes rejected the Maastricht treaty. In 2001, the Irish voted down the Nice treaty and in 2008 they rejected the Lisbon treaty. Still, these countries are part of the European Union and the EU moves on. In the above cases, additional concessions were provided, which led to a second referendum, where people accepted the changes.

However, saying all that, this time, it’s a bit different and complicated. It’s not a treaty that Britons rejected but the European Union as a whole. In addition to that, both Prime Minister David Cameron and Britain’s EU commissioner Jonathon Hill have resigned making the Brexit call even more prominent. But still, there are way more than zero chances that Britain will stay in the Union.

One way to make that happen will be to change the structure of the European Union itself, which Poland has already called for. It sounds difficult and sounds like something that will not be accepted by France or Germany but the EU need to recognize that people of Britain have released the infectious referendum genie and a treaty change with fresh approaches could be one of the few solutions to put the genie back in the bottle.
