German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, while speaking to Bundestag today has taken a tough stance towards the exit campaigners in Britain, who had predicted that Britain will continue to have access to the single market. Boris Johnson, the main face of the “Leave” campaign and likely next Prime Minister on Monday predicted that Britain will continue to have access to the single market, which is extremely important for Britain’s exports and financial services industry.

Speaking to the parliament, Ms. Merkel said that the negotiation will not be based on the principle of cherry picking by the United Kingdom. She spelt out that the European Union’s internal freedoms were indivisible and if the United Kingdom wants a Norway like relationship, in order to access the single market then like Norway, it will have to accept the freedom of movement.

This clearly means, whoever leads the negotiations, should the UK choose to trigger the Article 50, European members will be tough on the freedom of migration, which has been the major issue for Britain.
