Donald Trump Now Has About 50% Of Support Among Republicans

Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump holds support of 48% of registered Republicans and at people who lean towards the GOP, according to a new NBC News/Survey Monkey Weekly Election Tracking poll released Tuesday.

By the numbers:

  1. Donald Trump, 48%
  2. Ted Cruz, 27%
  3. John Kasich, 18%

Now Donald Trump’s focus is on securing the 1,237 delegates needed to tie-up the Republican Presidential nomination, and while he will likely hold the most delegates heading into the convention, of all Republicans who agree he should become the party’s nominee if he does not reach the cutoff number, the poll found:

  1. 57% say Donald Trump should win with a plurality
  2. 27% disagree
  3. 14% are unsure.
  4. 53% said he needs a majority
  5. 32% of Cruz supporters say Donald Trump should only need a plurality
  6. 24% of Kasich supporters say Donald Trump should win with a plurality

Most people surveyed would be satisfied seeing Mr. Trump square off with Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton in November:

  1. 52% agree;
  2. 30% said they would consider a 3rd-party candidate.

The poll was conducted online between 21-27 March with a national sample of 6,521 adults, including 5,741 who said they are registered voters, and carried a margin of error of plus or minus 1.7 percentage points.
