Greece’s consumer prices declined at a faster-than-expected pace in April, figures from the Hellenic Statistical Authority showed Friday.

The consumer price index fell 2.1 percent year-over-year in April, the same rate of decrease as in the previous month. Economists had expected a 2.0 percent drop for the month. Consumer prices have been falling since March 2013.

Housing costs slid 6.8 percent annually in April and transport costs dipped by 4.0 percent. Meanwhile, prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages grew 0.9 percent.

On a monthly basis, consumer prices climbed 0.5 percent in April, but much slower than March’s 2.4 percent increase. It was the second consecutive monthly rise.

The EU measure of inflation, or HICP, fell 1.8 percent yearly in April, exceeding economists’ expectations for a 1.7 percent decrease. In March, prices had dropped 1.9 percent.

Month-on-month, the harmonized index of consumer prices increased for the second straight month in April by 0.4 percent, after a 1.9 percent hike in the preceding month.
