Hermès Asked To Rename The Iconic “Birkin Bag”
Jane Birkin, the British model and singer who inspired Hermès bags, has asked the company to rename the carry-alls after reading a piece from PETA on the cruel slaughtering practices of Crocodile farms from in the US, Africa and Asia. The organization alleges that 2 or 1 year old farmed Crocodiles go into making a single Croco Birkin Bag.
In a statement released Wednesday Ms. Birkin said, “Having been alerted to the cruel practices endured by Crocodiles during their slaughter for the production of Hermès bags carrying my name. I have asked Hermès Group to rename the Birkin until better practices responding to international norms can be implemented for the production of this bag.”
PETA founder Ingrid Newkirk released this statement in response to Ms. Birkin’s request to Hermès.
“PETA, on behalf of all kind souls in the world, thanks Ms. Birkin for ending her association with Hermès, which makes grotesque handbags that were revealed in a PETA exposé to be constructed from the skins of factory-farmed and cruelly slaughtered Crocodiles. We call on Hermès to stop plundering wildlife, factory-farming Crocodiles and Alligators, and slaughtering them for their skins. Once Birkin Bags marked people as celebrities or at least members of the super-rich, but soon, no one will want to be caught dead carrying one, and animal advocates will then breathe a sigh of relief.”
The prolific handbag has been spotted on the arm of pop culture fixtures everywhere.
One has to wonder what PETA has to say about the Birkin’s that are made from Lizard skin and Ostrich hide.
It is my understanding that there are international protocols that govern the raising and harvesting of exotic creatures for such luxury items as described by PETA.
