Italy’s retail sales dropped unexpectedly in September, figures from the statistical office Istat showed Wednesday.

Retail sales fell 0.1 percent month-on-month in September, confounding expectations for a 0.5 percent rise. Sales had increased 0.2 percent in August and 0.3 percent in July.

Both food and non-food store sales edged down 0.1 percent each from prior month.

On a yearly basis, growth in sales improved to 1.5 percent from 1.3 percent in August. It was also faster than the 1.4 percent increase forecast by economists.

During three months to September, retail sales gained 0.2 percent from the previous quarter.
