Retail sales in Japan fell 0.2 percent on year in September, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said on Wednesday.

That missed forecasts for an increase of 0.4 percent following the 0.8 percent gain in August.

Sales from large retailers advanced an annual 1.7 percent – beating forecasts for a gain of 1.4 percent after rising 1.8 percent in the previous month.

On a monthly basis, retail sales gained a seasonally adjusted 0.7 percent – but that also missed expectations for an increase of 1.1 percent following the flat reading in August.
