On 18 June 2015, Pope Francis’ 184-pg Encyclical was published. There the Pope calls for the transformation of lifestyles, politics, agriculture, economics, and business in general to alleviate environmental degradation.
“The violence present in our hearts is also reflected in the symptoms of sickness evident in the soil, in the water, in the air and in all forms of life,” he wrote.
Pope Francis praised the world’s scientific advancements, but criticizes the use of novel technologies without adequate forethought, noting that: “our immense technological development has not been accompanied by a development in human responsibility, values and conscience.”
To the surprise and dismay of many people, Pope Francis has a comprehensive grasp of the subject of GE (genetically engineered) food and it inherent hazards, both to the environment and human health.
Far from coming from a strictly religious perspective, he addressed the issue from the point of ecological and economical balance.
The Pope noted: “The expansion of these GE crops has the effect of destroying the complex network of ecosystems, diminishing the diversity of production and affecting regional economies, now and in the future.
In various countries, we see an expansion of oligopolies for the production of cereals and other products needed for their cultivation. This dependency would be aggravated were the production of infertile seeds to be considered. The effect is to force farmers to purchase them from the large producers.
These issues require constant attention and a concern for their ethical implications. A broad, responsible scientific and social debate needs to take place, one capable of considering all the available information and of calling things by their name.
Discussions are needed in which all those directly or indirectly affected, farmers, consumers, civil authorities, scientists, seed producers, people living near fumigated fields, and others, can make known their problems and concerns, and have access to adequate and reliable information in order to make decisions for the common good, present and future.
This is a complex environmental issue; it calls for a comprehensive approach which would require, at the very least, greater efforts to finance various lines of interdependent, interdisciplinary research capable of shedding new light on the problem.”
Kudos to Pope Francis
Monsanto (NYSE:MON) recently made a bid to take over Syngenta (NYSE:SYT), the world’s largest pesticide producer.
The $45.1-B bid was rejected, but there is still a chance for a merger, in which case Monsanto may assume the Syngenta name, or a new more “Neutral” name.
The chemical technology industry is busy renaming and re-branding itself and its toxic products in an effort to disguise their essential nature.
Monsanto recently started using the words “seed protectants” for pesticides.
The Big Q: Do these chemicals protect seeds ?
You could argue that they do, but their main function is to kill insects and other plants. Yet it is harder to associate a “seed protectant” with toxic pesticide exposure that can cause harm to human health, yes?
The bottom line, Monsanto is a chemical company that is now using many of the same “war chemicals” it once produced to grow our food.
Monsanto’s President and COO, Brett Bergemann, says that, “We have the challenge of feeding 9.5-B people by 2050. We need to meet that need in a sustainable way and we need to drive sustainable intensification of agriculture.”
The company designs and patents seeds that withstand the herbicides they make and sell. They promised weeds would not develop resistance, but 10-M acres of super-weeds stand witness to that misrepresention. This has led to more Roundup being used to keep up with the super-weeds. Now crops resistant to even more toxic chemicals are being brought to market. Everything Monsanto has ever done has been centered around toxic chemicals.
It is very clear that toxins and good health do not go together, and anyone can realize that Monsanto is not in the health-food business. Monsanto is in the poison business, and not about to change their 100 yr old record, and no matter how many new words they invent to confuse consumers about the use of toxins on your food.
