North American Box Office: ‘Jurassic World’ Marks $500-M, ‘Ted 2′ Misses

‘Jurassic World’ became the 5th film in history to take $500-M at the North American Box office winning the weekend. R-rated Ted 2 posted disappointing box office ticket sales this weekend finishing in 3rd spot behind ‘Inside Out’ with about $33-M Vs and expected $44-M.

Jurassic World from Universal, a unit of Comcast Corp (NASDAQ:CMCSA), grossed $54.2-M in its 3rd frame to mark $500-M, the 5th film to earn $500-M or more domestically.

The others: The Dark Knight ($534.9-M), The Avengers ($623.4-M), Titanic ($658.7-M) and Avatar ($760.5-M). To boot, it’s now the top-grossing film of Y 2015 to date after overtaking Avengers: Age of Ultron ($452.5-M).

At the international box office Jurassic World took $82.5-M from 66 markets for $737.5-M and global take of $1.238-B to become the # 8 title of all time to date.

Inside Out from Disney (NYSE:DIS) fell 42% in its 2nd frame to $52.1-M for $184.9-M. Overseas, the family fare film earned $26.4-M expanding into a total of 42 markets for a foreign take of $81.5-M and $266.4-M worldwide.

Paramount, a unit of Viacom (NASDAQ:VIA) and Skydance’s Terminator: Genisys, opened overseas in 10 markets this weekend ahead of its 1 July North American box office debut, grossed $8.3-M.

The weekend’s other new nationwide opening, dog friendly Max, opened to $12.2-M to place 4th. The film garnered an A CinemaScore.

Paul Feig’s Spy grossed $7.8-M for a domestic total of $88.4-M in its 4th frame. Worldwide it has earned $195-M to date.

In a limited releases, director Alan Rickman’s drama A Little Chaos, starring Kate Winslet, opened ed in 83 theaters, for a light box office of $186,000 for a location average of $2,241.

Specialty holdover: Sundance Film Festival favorite Me and Earl and the Dying Girl grossed $992,000 in its 3rd frame from 354 theaters for a take of $1.9-M. The Fox Searchlight, a unit of 21st Century Fox (NASDAQ:FOX) is doing well in art houses.
