Nuccio Bertone’s Ferrari 250 GT SWB Speciale To Auction At Pebble Beach
Over the production run of Ferrari’s 250 GT Berlinetta SWB s/n 03269 just 176 were built, and there was only 1 coach-built example.
The 1962 250 GT SWB Berlinetta Speciale, is different from all the 176 cars that Ferrari manufactured because it was designed by Giorgietto Giugiaro while with Carrozeria Bertone. It is the Bertone coachbuilt Ferrari, built for Nuccio Bertone’s personal use.
Present in the “Greatest Ferraris of All Time Hall of Fame, the brilliant, rare 250 GT Berlinetta SWB was the top of Ferrari’s design teams: Giotto Bizzarrini, Carlo Chiti, Mauro Forghieri, Pininfarina and Scaglietti.
Nuccio Bertone’s ambition was to build cars for Enzo Ferrari, the Italian coachbuilder was never officially engaged by Maranello and that makes finding a Bertone-designed Ferrari difficult.
The only ones that Bertone constructed for Ferrari were a 1950 166 Inter Cabriolet built for Franco Cornacchia, a 1959 250 GT SWB Coupe built for industrialist Enrico Wax and this beautiful Blu-Notte Metallizzato 250 GT SWB Speciale built for his personal use.
Senor Bertone bought a complete 250 GT SWB Chassis from Ferrari and, together with Giugiaro, constructed his own body on it.
Inspired by Ferrari’s racing cars of the period the car received a “Sharknose” front-end plus a number of competition-inspired additions like a Plexiglas bug deflector, a wide hood scoop, drilled rocker trim and a trail of louvers following the line created by the rear quarter windows .
These bespoke or “tailor made” details combined make the 250 GT SWB Berlinetta Speciale perhaps one of the most desirable and known Ferrari classic 1-off’s constructed.
This car has be in Lorenzo Zambrano’s private collection for the past 30 yrs.
The car is set to go across the block at the Pebble Beach auction event hosted by Gooding and Company for an estimated $14,000,000 – 16,000,000 in August.
