The European Central Bank said loans to the private sector in the eurozone picked up pace in February.

Data showed loans to households climbed by 1.6% in February from 1.4% in January. Loans to companies rose by 0.9% in annual terms last month from 0.5% in the preceding month.

The data emerge before the unveiling of a new series of inexpensive liquidity for European banks in return for them lending to houses and entities which the central bank hopes will beef up economic activity in the region.
