Japanese Economy Minister Akira Amari has announced his resignation following a week of denying bribe accusations.

Amari, a major engineer of the Japan’s Abenomics program, is the most influential minister since Prime Minister Shinzo Abe assumed post in 2012. He also headed the premier’s growth strategy to bolster the country’s competitiveness.

The minister apologized for the scandal, which had led to embarrassment. Although the money was only a political donation, Amari said he should take responsibility for what happened in his office under his helm.

A Shukan Bunshun article previously reported Amari and his staff pocketed money from an unknown construction company, which amounted to around ¥12 million ($101,000).
