A federal judge in New York supported Apple Inc. in its attempt to thwart the US government’s move to unlock an iPhone as part of a probe into a drugs case.
The decision surfaces as the tech giant sought a showdown with the Federal Bureau of Investigation over the latter’s order to decode an iPhone owned by one of the suspects in the San Bernardino shooting.
Judge James Orenstein, in his 50-page ruling, backed certain stipulations the Apple presented in its defense and blasted the American government over a bid to pre-empt Congress by urging the courts to broaden its jurisdiction.
But a California court released an order against Apple, seeking to overturn the demand.
