Singapore’s unemployment rate held steady in the three months ended September, defying economists’ expectations for an increase, preliminary figures released by the Ministry of Manpower revealed Thursday.

The overall jobless rate came at a seasonally adjusted 2.0 percent in the third quarter, the same rate as in the previous quarter. Economists had expected the rate to rise to 2.1 percent.

In the corresponding period last year, the unemployment rate was 1.9 percent.

After seasonal adjustments, resident unemployment rate climbed to 3.0 percent in the September quarter from 2.8 percent in the previous three months.

Unemployed residents increased to 66,800 in the three-month period to September from 62,800 in the June quarter. A year ago, the jobless figure totaled 62,200.
