Sweden’s foreign trade surplus increased notably in December from a year ago, as exports grew much faster than imports, figures from Statistics Sweden showed Thursday.

The trade surplus rose to SEK 4.7 billion in December from SEK 0.4 billion in the corresponding month last year.

The value of exports climbed 7.0 percent year-over-year in December to SEK 97.6 million. Imports went up 2.0 percent to SEK 92.9 million.

Trade with countries outside the EU resulted in a surplus of SEK 16.3 billion, while the EU trade balance showed a deficit of SEK 11.6 billion.

The seasonally adjusted trade surplus was SEK 1.7 billion in December against a surplus of SEK 1.1 billion.

In the whole year, the net trade surplus totaled SEK 19.5 billion compared to a surplus of SEK 14.4 billion in 2014. Both exports and imports rose by 5 percent and 4.0 percent, respectively.
