Swiss industrial production declined in the third quarter at the fastest pace since 2009, the Federal Statistics Office showed Thursday.

Industrial output dropped 2.8 percent year-on-year in the third quarter, bigger than the 2.1 percent decrease seen a quarter ago. Output was down for the third consecutive month.

This was the biggest fall since the third quarter of 2009, when output dropped 6.8 percent.

Industrial production decreased 1 percent in September and by 6 percent in August.

In the third quarter, production in the secondary sector that includes industry and construction decreased 3.1 percent from the same period of last year. In construction, production slid 4.9 percent from last year.

Industrial turnover registered an annual decrease of 6.4 percent in the third quarter. In the secondary sector, turnover slipped 6.2 percent.
