Taiwan’s commercial sales logged a surprise decline in March after a gain in the previous month, figures from the Ministry of Economic Affairs showed Thursday.

Sales in trade and food services industries dropped 0.65 percent year-on-year following a 0.91 percent growth in February. Economists were looking for a 0.75 percent increase. In January, commercial sales fell 0.56 percent.

Wholesale sales dropped 1.48 percent annually in March, falling for a second straight month. Retail sales grew for a second month running, up 1.31 percent, but much smaller a gain compared to February’s 10.72 percent growth.

Sales in food and beverage services also grew for the second consecutive month, rising 1.92 percent in March after a 10.69 percent surge in February.

Month-on-month, commercial sales grew 11.79 percent in March.
