Turkey’s foreign trade deficit decreased in May from a year ago, as exports rose and imports fell, figures from the Turkish Statistical Institute showed Thursday.

The trade deficit narrowed to $5.05 billion in May from $6.8 billion in the corresponding month last year.

Exports grew 9.6 percent year-over-year in May, while imports dropped by 3.8 percent.

On a monthly basis, the seasonally and calendar adjusted exports rose 5.9 percent in May and imports went up by 2.1 percent.

During the first five months of the year, total trade deficit of the country was $21.4 billion versus $27.07 billion in the same period of 2015.
