Partly reflecting another notable decrease in orders for transportation equipment, the Commerce Department released a report on Tuesday showing that new orders for U.S. manufactured durable goods fell more than expected in September.

The report said durable goods orders slid by 1.2 percent in September following a revised 3.0 percent decrease in August.

Economists had expected durable goods orders to fall by 1.0 percent compared to the 2.3 percent drop that had been reported for the previous month.

Excluding the continued decrease in orders for transportation equipment, durable goods orders fell by a more modest 0.4 percent in September after declining by 0.9 percent in August. Ex-transportation orders had been expected to edge down by 0.1 percent.
