After reporting a notable increase in U.S. retail sales in the previous month, the Commerce Department released a report on Tuesday showing a modest uptick in sales in the month of August.

The report said retail sales edged up by 0.2 percent in August following an upwardly revised 0.7 percent increase in July.

Economists had expected retail sales to rise by 0.3 percent compared to the 0.6 percent growth originally reported for the previous month.

Excluding an increase in auto sales, retail sales ticked up by just 0.1 percent in August after climbing by 0.6 percent in July. Ex-auto sales had been expected to inch up by 0.2 percent.
