Wherever You Go, Bring Your Own Water

When, I was a boy in the 40’s and 50’s we drank cool water out of hoses, water fountains, and taps.

But today, only if you are healthy and your immune system is strong, can you do that, because your risk of catching a disease is low.

Today, I, and I believe the majority of others in the US, would rather drink water that I know is pure.

Because on occasion, it’s possible for water-borne diseases to pass through the water supply and I do not want to be that statistic.

From Y 2011 to 2012, 32 drinking water-associated outbreaks were reported, causing at least 431 cases of illness, 102 hospitalizations, and 14 deaths.

Norovirus, E. coli, Shigella, giardia, and other pathogens were identified as part of the outbreaks, although most of the water–associated outbreaks were due to Legionella in building plumbing systems and untreated groundwater.

None of the outbreaks were due to “City Water” that had been properly treated, so this is, again, a small risk.

A more pressing concern may be the vast number of human-made chemicals finding their way into the public water supply.

There are more than 116,000 human-made chemicals now detected in public water systems.

This includes pharmaceutical drugs, both those excreted through urine and feces and those flushed down the drain or toilet. Many of these are not removed by standard water-treatment processes.

Chemicals from perfume, cologne, lotions, sunscreens, and medicated creams also add to the contamination problem, as does runoff from concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs), which are among the worst water polluters on the Planet.

Even aging water pipes in the US have become a source of toxic exposure that many fail to recognize, as they may deposit Lead, Copper, and harmful bacteria into the water.

It is because of potential contaminants like these that I like the idea of installing a water filter onto the family home’s tap and shower and bath, and do not drink from a drinking fountain ever.

Pure bottled water is ubiquitous now, however it is more expensive than gasoline.

The latest data that I found is from Y 2010, it shows that Americans purchased 31-B liters of bottled water, typically paying upwards of $1.00 per pint bottle, which is 1,900X the price of tap water. And approximately 40% of bottled water actually is just tap water that has received additional treatment.

So, install the filter and bring your own.

As for the water bottle, my favorite is glass. Glass is non-toxic and does not leach any undesirable contaminants. Simply fill up a 750ml bottle from your filtered tap at home and you will have a supply of fresh, pure water to last you all day.

Makes sense yes…and know that you are doing your part to end the plastic bottle pollution on our Planet.

Have a terrific weekend.
