Japan housing starts data for September is due at 1:00 am ET Friday. Housing starts are seen to rise an annual 6.4 percent after gaining 8.8 percent in the previous month.

Ahead of the data, the yen retreated from early highs against its major rivals.

As of 12:55 am ET, the yen was trading at 133.23 against the euro, 185.80 against the pound, 121.36 against the U.S. dollar and 122.53 against the Swiss franc.
