F1: Hamilton Takes The Pole At The Hungarian Grand Prix
F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton took pole position for the Hungarian Grand Prix Saturday with a “hot” lap more than 0:50 sec faster than Mercedes team mate Nico Rosberg.
The 2 MBZ rivals will line up together on the front row Sunday, with Ferrari’s 4X champion Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull’s Australian 2014 race winner Daniel Ricciardo behind them on the 2nd row.
The pole was Hamilton’s 9th in 10 races this season, the 47th of his career and left him in place for a 5th career win at the Hungaroring.
Mr. Hamilton leads Mr. Rosberg by 17 pts before a race that marks the halfway mark of this season.
Mr. Rosberg, who has won 3X to Mr. Hamilton’s 5 wins this season, was on pole in Hungary last year.
“I don’t have an explanation,” he said. “I just didn’t find the pace. It has been a bit up and down all weekend, I am not happy with how it went today.”
Behind the Top 4, Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen qualified 5th with fellow-Finn Valtteri Bottas lining up 6th for the Williams team.
Red Bull’s Russian Daniil Kvyat and Brazilian Felipe Massa, for Williams, share the 4th row.
McLaren, a team with an impressive record in Hungary, saw another difficult afternoon with Fernando Alonso pushing his broken down car back to the pit lane likely to be one of the year’s strongest and memorable images.
The 2nd phase of qualifying was Red-flagged to allow marshals to help the sweating Spaniard get the McLaren off the track.
Mr.Alonso will line up in 15th place with team mate Jenson Button alongside in 16th. Both drivers took their 1st Grand Prix win in Hungary, but even a point will be a bonus in this race.
The 2 Saubers and two Manor Marussias will start from the 9th and 10th rows, respectively
