Ferrari 2 & 3 On The Grid At Monza, Hamilton On The Pole
Lewis Hamilton, the defending champion, is on the Pole at Monza has the Mercedes Team driver just 1 behind Ayrton Senna in the all-time record of successive P1’s/ But, it is the unexpected “quickness” of Ferrari Team drivers Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel to the lead Mercedes ahead of Nico Rosberg that proved to be Saturday’s big Formula 1 news.
Nico Rosberg in his AMC Mercedes begin behind both Ferraris Sunday starting 4th.
What a contrast at Ferrari, where Raikkonen’s front-row starting spot is his 1st in 2 years. Finally, it seems, he may have got on top of the qualifying woes which have plagued him throughout Y 2015.
Beaten by Mr. Hamilton in all 3 practice sessions this weekend, any prospect of Mr. Rosberg challenging for Pole position was over from the moment the upgraded engine Mercedes introduced this weekend faltered on his car, causing change back to the old unit which he used in Spa 2 weeks ago.
The Scuderia also introduced a new engine this weekend, a deployment which James Allison, Ferrari’s technical director has credited as the inspiration for their unanticipated run past Mr. Rosberg.
Now this leaves Mercedes looking over their shoulders and Sunday’s race vulnerable to a twist in the tale of a Silver Arrows take all.
Mercedes is under pressure at Monza in front of the Tifosi, whose passionate support for Ferrari could be worth a tenth or two to Messrs Raikkonen and Vettel.
Two teams who ought to be fighting it out with Mercedes and Ferrari at the front will be at the back, Red Bull and McLaren joining the junior team Toro Rosso in having grid penalties for both drivers as a result of using more than the permitted number of engine parts.
The full extent of the penalties is yet to be known, but Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo, who qualified 16th said he expected to be at the back of the grid.
The McLarens qualified 16th and 17th, Jenson Button 0.096 secs ahead of Fernando Alonso after the Spaniard hit traffic on his final lap.
The pair had been the other way around, with Alonso this time 0.033 secs ahead after their 1st runs, as the two former champions’ very tight qualifying battle continued this season.
This looks to be a great race Sunday.
