How Binary Options Brokers Earn Revenue From Losing Trades

Summary

Binary brokers profit when you lose because the house structure is built around your loss. It sounds aggressive but it is how every binary options broker makes money. You pay $10 to bet price goes up in 5 minutes and win returns only $8, meaning payout is 80 percent. Win means you get back $8 plus your original $10. Lose means the entire $10 disappears. The broker keeps that whole $10 loss as revenue. Your win pays them nothing.

Before you tradeForex, CFDs, crypto derivatives and binary options are high-risk products and most retail traders lose money. Binary options are banned or restricted for retail clients in many countries. Check that a firm is licensed where you live before you deposit. This page is educational and is not financial advice.

This asymmetry is why binary options are not a game of picking direction correctly. Even at 55 percent accuracy, you lose money because winning returns less than losing costs more. To break even with an 80 percent payout rate, you need to be right over 54 point 31 percent of the time before fees or slippage touch your balance. One bad streak wipes out several good trades just keeping pace.

Binary brokers also make money when you win because they never pay full value on a win. A $10 bet with an 80 percent payout returns $8, not $10. That 20 percent haircut is the broker's cut for every winning trade of yours. They take a piece whether you are right or wrong.

The real money for binary brokers comes from churn and expiration. Traders place hundreds of trades, hold positions until last second, roll over losses into bigger bets, and eventually blow up their account. Each expired ticket is revenue with zero cost to the broker. Binary options expire in seconds or minutes so there is no room for recovery once you are wrong.

Binary brokers also make money from spreads on underlying assets if they offer CFDs alongside binarys. On a EUR/USD CFD trade, the spread might be 1 pip wide. If you buy at 1.0852 instead of mid-market 1.0847, that 5 pip difference is profit for the broker from tick one. Binary options don't have spreads because there is no position to hold, but the payout cap serves the same function as a spread by embedding cost into every outcome.

Binary brokers also make money when you win on crypto futures and perps through funding rates and leverage fees. When you go long on Binance or Bybit with 20x leverage, your $100 margin controls $2,000 of value. A tiny price move can wipe out the whole position. The broker collects liquidation revenue if you blow up. They also collect funding rate payments every few hours when perp positions are held open.

Binary brokers also make money from withdrawal fees and spreads on CFD trades where they act as market maker rather than passing orders to a real exchange. On Bybit or Binance futures, the spread is often tight but still exists. If you buy at 1.0852 instead of mid-market 1.0847, that 5 pip difference is profit for the broker from tick one.
