Norway’s unemployment rate held steady in June, defying economists’ expectations for an increase, the Labour and Welfare Administration, or NAV said Friday.

The registered jobless rate came in at 2.9 percent in June, the same rate as in the previous month. Meanwhile, it was expected to rise to 3.0 percent.

In the corresponding month last year, the unemployment rate was 2.8 percent.

The number of unemployed people rose to 80,965 in June from 80,342 in May. A year ago, the jobless figure totaled 77,310.
