Pope Francis’ finance chief hailed free markets, contending with the notion the Catholic church has turned its backs on business and capitalism.

Head of the Holy See’s secretariat for the economy, Cardinal George Pell, said there is no better model available as of now than market economies because of its capability to recuperate following the Great Depression and global crisis.

He also mentioned what former UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher said before, that the Good Samaritan won’t be able to help a man who was beaten and robbed on the way to Jericho if he had no money.

Pell’s remarks was much different from Pope’s, as the latter once criticized multinational firms for plundering the Earth in an encyclical letter on the environment released in June.
