SuperCar Review: McLaren 650S Spider
The Big Q: What’s a McLaren?”
The Big A: McLaren is a small manufacturer tucked away in Woking, England, about 30 miles from London. The constructor is well-known in elite racing circles, but has also produced some road cars to compete with supercar brands such as Ferrari, a unit of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (NYSE:FCAU), and Lamborghini, a unit of Volkswagen AG (OTCMKT:VLKAY).
Among many car enthusiasts McLaren’s original super road car, the F1 stands as one of the best ever built.
The company stands for raw speed and simplicity, and has always embodied that philosophy.
The McLaren 650S is also a brilliant supercar. And the Spider is one of the most beautiful new cars on sale today. McLaren is a company that builds race cars, it shows in this road car.
At least one reviewer said, “It is the best thing ever, and if it does not make you smile, you just plain do not like supercars.”
The body is understated by supercar standards, with soft elegant curves flowing around it, this is a driving car. And details you may never see or notice come together in harmony.
The 650S holds a 3.8-liter, twin-turbo V-8 that produces 650 PS of power or 641 hp and 500 foot pounds of torque: It Red lines at 8,500 rpm.
The 650S is fast, 60 mph comes in less than 3 secs, and 125 mph comes before most things reach 60, the top speed is 207 mph.
This race bred car is not difficult to drive.
Like other modern supercars, it will move around city streets easily. The 650S’s V-8 is mated to a 7-speed, dual-clutch transmission that will do all the shifting if you prefer things that way, but it never tries to hide its manual roots.
In fully automatic mode, the driver feels the same balancing from the car’s electronics managed with a traditional 3-pedal setup.
Test driver say the McLaren never feels brittle or dangerous. That it will do sprints to triple digits, rip your face off with its carbon ceramic brakes and cartoonish levels of grip, go back up to speed 2 secs later and then just as easily join slow-moving traffic without so much as a complaint or a rattle.
In your car park or on the track, this is a terrific supercar.
Stay tuned…
