Auction News: Shelby Cobra’s Hammer for $1,000,000+
Classic Shelby “Muscle” was the theme at the Mecum Auction in Indianapolis, Indiana last weekend, where a pair of Cobras each reached 7 figures during bidding.
Highlighting the sale was a 1967 Cobra 427, a recently-restored example with about 20,000 original miles.
That Cobra sold for $1.1-M, while a Y 1964 with the 289 cubic inch V-8 was bid up to $1-M later in the day. That 1964 model was highly-optioned and liveried in silver-blue with red leather.
Those 2 Cobras and a 1965 GT350, which sold for $500,000, were all previously part of the Joe McMurrey collection.
That GT350 is unique in that it was one of the 1st built when Shelby began homologating cars for SCCA racing. It is #41 out of the 1st roughly 100 built as homologation cars, and a well-known example to members of the Shelby enthusiast world.
The auction was big on muscle cars, including a $425,000 1970 Plymouth Hemi Cuda and a $260,000 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429. However, a 1972 Ferrari Dino GT also cracked the Top 5 sales by hammering for $310,000.
1,567 cars went across Mecum’s auction block, 1,094 of were sold.
