Hungary’s unemployment rate held steady in the three months ended October, defying economists’ expectations for a decrease, figures from the Hungarian Central Statistical Office showed Friday.

The jobless rate came in at 6.4 percent in the August to October period, the same rate as in the previous three-month period. Economists had forecast the rate to fall to 6.2 percent.

In the corresponding period of the previous year, the unemployment rate was 7.1 percent.

The number of unemployed people decreased to 290,100 in the October quarter from 292,700 in the preceding three months. A year ago, the jobless figure totaled 317,100.

The youth unemployment rate, which applies to the 15 to 24 age group, dropped by 3.6 percent to 16.2 percent in the three-month period to October.

The employment rate also remained unchanged at 56.6 percent in the August to October period.
