Norway’s unemployment rate increased unexpectedly in June after remaining stable in the previous month, figures from Statistics Norway showed Wednesday.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose to 4.5 percent in June from 4.3 percent in May, the same rate as in the prior month. Economists had expected the rate to remain stable at 4.3 percent.

In the corresponding month of the preceding year, the jobless rate was 3.3 percent.

The number of unemployed people increased to 124,000 in June from 119,000 in May. A year ago, the jobless figure totaled 90,000.

The unemployment rate grew 0.3 percent, or by 8,000 persons from March to June. The increase is within the error margin of the LFS, but still in line with an increasing trend since May 2014.

The rate for March indicates the average for February to April period and the June figure reflects May to July period.

Meanwhile, the seasonally adjusted employment rate held steady at 68.2 percent in June.
