Portugal’s unemployment rate increased marginally in August after staying flat in the prior month, preliminary figures from Statistics Portugal showed Tuesday.

The seasonally adjusted jobless rate rose to 12.4 percent in August from 12.3 percent in July, which was revised up from 12.1 percent. In the corresponding month last year, the unemployment rate was 13.6 percent.

The number of unemployed people increased to 633,000 in August from 628,200 in the previous month. A year ago, the jobless figure totaled 699,800.

The youth unemployment rate, which applies to the 15 to 24 age group, came in at 31.8 percent in August, up from 31.2 percent a month ago.

At the same time, the employment rate dropped to 57.0 percent in August from 57.5 percent in July.
