Government data revealed on Friday that Japan’s April core consumer prices plunged 0.3 percent from a year ago.

The core consumer price index was more than the median estimate of economists for a 0.4 percent annual gain.

The so-called core-core inflation index, which excludes food and energy prices and is similar to the core index used in the United States, increased by 0.7 percent in the year to April.

Tokyo’s core consumer prices dropped 0.5 percent in May from last year.
