‘007’ & ‘Peanuts’ Capture This Weekend’s Box Office

James Bond and Charlie Brown’s gang are driving the North American box office after a few weak weekends.

According to early Friday returns, Spectre is on course to earn $30-M Friday and $80-M for the weekend from 3,972 locations, the widest release of any title in the spy franchise.

The Peanuts Movie is also scoring with moviegoers for a $14-M Friday and projected weekend take of $48-M from 3,890 locations.

James Bond’s 24th film kicked off at 7;00pThursday night as Spectre earned $5.25-M, ahead of the $4.6-M grossed by Skyfall in Thursday night previews in Y 2012. Skyfallwent on to earn $88.4-M for the weekend, a series best.

Sony (NYSE:SNE), MGM and Eon Productions, who partnered on Spectre, note that the debut faces more competition than Skyfall, which had the weekend to itself in terms of new releases.

Daniel Craig reprises his role as 007 in the latest box office installment, which saw Sam Mendes returning to direct.

The action film follows Bond as he travels the globe attempting to uncover a sinister organization. Christoph Waltz joins the franchise as the villain, and Lea Seydoux and Monica Bellucci are on board as the new Bond Girls.

The film cost $250-M to produce after incentives and rebates, so will need to do strong business at the global box office.

The film is already breaking records in the UK, where it earned $63.8-M in its 1st 7 days, the largest opening of all time and beating Skyfall, which became the 1st Bond movie to cross $1-B at the worldwide box office with $1.1-B in global ticket sales.

Have some fun, see a movie this weekend.
