A Look Back At The Now Legendary Ferrari 599 GTO Supercar
In Y 2006 the Ferrari 599 GTB was the fastest V12 production car you could buy.
Then in Y 2010 the company released the 599 GTO, the fastest ever road-going Ferrari. This Supercar is based on the 599XX experimental track car, and was developed to a specific performance-oriented brief and is available to just 599 clients.
The 599 GTO (Gran Turismo Omologata) benefits from Ferrari’s racing commitment and set a record lap time at Fiorano in 1’24”.
Ferrari says the Fiorano lap time provides just 1 indication of the potential of this car: 670 hp packed into a 1495 kg vehicle represents a power to weight ratio of just 2.23kg/hp, and delivers a neck-snapping 0-100 kmh acceleration time of just 3.35” as well as a top speed of more than 335 kmh (208 mph).
Back then Ferrari said the 599 GTO is practically devoid of understeer thanks to the highly sophisticated electronic controls married to a handling set-up tuned for level of responsiveness that is “close to the limit”.
The 599 GTO is equipped with many features including the, 2nd-generation carbon-ceramic brakes that are lighter and offer better performance, new aerodynamic innovations such as wheel doughnuts that increase aerodynamic efficiency and improve brake cooling, and the Supersport tires developed by Michelin with a wider front tire for greater road-holding.
The driver-car interface features the adoption of the Virtual Race Engineer (VRE) which provides the driver with instantaneous information on performance.
The 599 GTO’s styling is more aggressive, borrowing characteristics from the 599XX and from the powerful sound of the iconic V12 engine.
The GTO name is not something Ferrari takes lightly.
Two previous models, the 250 GTO, in Y 1962 dominated GT racing categories in the 1960’s and is now the most highly prized collector’s car, and the iconic 1984 GTO, which invented the modern Supercar genre.
Though the 599 GTO’s engine is a carbon-copy of the 599XX unit, road-going modifications were made to complies with Euro 5 and LEV 2 standards.
The 5999cc 65° V12 engine punches out 670CV at 8250rpm with maximum torque of 620Nm at 6500rpm without a loss of flexibility even at medium and low revs. This result was achieved by improving fluid-dynamics and components to reduce internal friction with a new crankshaft.
A new racing-type intake system with a new manifold and diffuser-type intake geometry and short inlet tracts designed has improved power delivery at high revs and reduced losses. Engineers maximized volumetric efficiency per cylinder by creating a connection between the 2 plenums at the front to compensate for variations in the volume.
The driver can enjoy the unmistakable Ferrari sound, the engine noise inside the car is carefully controlled to balance the intake sound with the exhaust, which features a 599XX derived 6-into-1 manifold.
The 599 GTO features the 599XX’s lower 60ms shift times and the possibility to make multiple downshifts, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are at 17.5km/l and 411g/km respectively.
One of the most significant innovations on the 599 GTO is the correlation between the chassis set-up, which is close to the handling limit, and the input from the electronic controls which are developed to increase overall levels of performance.
An exclusive preview for a small number of Ferrari clients was held on 14 April 2010 at the Military Academy in Modena, Italy. The public debut of the 599 GTO was at the Beijing International Motor Show at the end of April 2010.
The Ferrari 599 GTO was priced at $423,791.00 plus tax and license.
There were just 599 ever made.
Very few people get the chance to own a Ferrari GTO, GTO’s are extremely rare, and extremely special cars, if you are lucky enough to see just one, you are having a good day. If you are lucky enough to own one, well, you’re having a super life.
You will need a giant bank account to afford the GTO 599, as they have gone up in value, but when you consider what you are buying, it is worth it.
Stay tuned…
