U.K. Labour Party Chief Jeremy Corbyn is set to face a leadership challenge as Angela Eagle announced on Saturday that she will launch her bid for the party’s top position next week.
Like the Conservatives, the main U.K. opposition party has witnessed chaos after the surprise “Brexit” vote. Several members of the shadow cabinet, including Eagle, quit in a revolt against Corbyn leadership.
Eagle’s announcement came after Deputy Leader Tom Watson called off talks with unions aimed to resolve the divisive crisis in the Labour party.
The crisis also led to a no-confidence move against Corbyn last month, which he lost.
There was “no realistic prospect of reaching a compromise”, after Corbyn publicly declared to stay as the leader “come what may”, Watson said.
Following this, Eagle said she will announce her bid for the Labour Party leadership on Monday.
Eagle, 55, is the MP for Wallasey. She is openly gay and has championed social causes such as smoking bans, hunting ban and same sex marriages. She had campaigned for the U.K. to remain in the EU.
“I will explain my vision for the country and the difference a strong Labour Party can make,” the former shadow business secretary said.
Corbyn “failed to fulfill his first and foremost duty – that is to lead an organised and effective Parliamentary Labour Party”, she said.
Meanwhile, Corbyn has appealed for unity within the Labour Party, urging MPs to “come together”.
