AP’s Diamond Fury Timepiece, Inspired by Game of Thrones’ Daenerys Targaryen
The 6th season of Game of Thrones has begun, to the delight of fans of the widely successful fantasy television series.
Notably, Audemars Piguet CEO Francois-Henry Bennahmias is one of the show’s many avid fans.
In Singapore for the Grand Opening of the boutique at Liat Towers, Mr. Bennahmias sat down for a chat revealing that the luxury brand’s statement jewelry piece for Y 2016 was inspired by flaxen-haired Daenerys Targaryen, aka the Khaleesi (Queen).
Called Diamond Fury, the 4,841-Diamond-studded, white-Gold watch is the follow-up to Audemars Piguet’s haute joaillerie timepiece from last year, Diamond Punk.
Taking inspiration from Queen Daenerys’ 3 Dragon children, Diamond Fury has an aggressive angularity that makes it equal chic and cool.
During discussions with the AP design team, Mr. Bennahmias said he made it clear that he wanted awe-inspiring, not auspicious: “I had Khaleesi in my mind. I told my team, I want a dragon watch. But not like a Chinese dragon, okay, but the Dragons from Game of Thrones. I want the woman wearing this to be like Khaleesi, she is in charge, she’s the one leading because she’s got her Dragons.”
With its architectural, brilliant spikes that evoke what the AP describes as “a carapace of gems”, Diamond Fury may make its wearer feel powerful. It is a worthy sequel to Diamond Punk, a boxier design with pyramidal details that give it an edgy dimensionality, and saw it named best jewelery watch at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Geneve. Both watches have dials that are hidden behind gem-set covers
Next year, there will be yet another addition to this high end watch/jewelry family, you can call it a completion of the trilogy, if you will. But for now, Mr. Bennahmias is “mum” about what this 3rd design will look like, although he promises: “Women will be very pleased.”
Have a terrific weekend.
