Australia picked up 17,400 jobs in August, the Australian Bureau of Statistics said on Thursday – shattering expectations for an increase of 5,000 following the 37,900 gain in July.

The jobless rate came in at 6.2 percent, in line with expectations and down from 6.3 percent in the previous month.

The participation rate was 65.0 percent, also matching forecasts and down from 65.1 percent a month earlier.
