The total number of new motor vehicle sales in Australia was down a seasonally adjusted 1.5 percent on month in April, the Australian Bureau of Statistics said on Monday – standing at 94,888.

That was down from the 0.5 percent increase in March.

By category, sales of passenger vehicles fell 8.3 percent, while other vehicles were down 0.6 percent. Over the same period, Sports utility vehicles sales climbed 7.4 percent.

By region, the Australian Capital Territory had the largest percentage decrease (6.1 percent) followed by Queensland (4.8 percent) and Western Australia (2.8 percent). Over the same period, the Northern Territory saw the largest increase in sales (3.2 percent).

On a yearly basis, sales added 2.8 percent following the 4.4 percent gain in the previous month.
