Austrian lawmakers on Friday approved the commencement of talks for a EUR 86 billion bailout for Greece, following a heated debate during a special session in the parliament.

Members of the ruling coalition, the Social Democratic Party (SPO) and the Austrian People’s Party (OVP), backed the proposal, which was approved with a clear majority. The opposition Freedom Party voted against the move, as announced earlier.

Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann sought parliament support for the proposal for a bailout loan for Greece from the European Stability Mechanism, saying it was a “first step” and a “serious opportunity”, the news agency APA reported.

The German parliament is set to vote on the Greek bailout deal on Friday. French and Finnish parliaments have already given their approval to the start negotiations on the third rescue for the country.
