Box Office: ‘Captain America: Civil War’ Debuted at $181.8-M Domestically

The Superhero movie to become the 1st title of Y 2016 to cross $1-B, continuing Disney’s (NYSE:DIS) cinema domination

Marvel Studios and Disney’s Captain America: Civil War launched to a mighty $181.8-M in North America at the weekend, launching the Summer box office, and marking the 5th-best opening of all time, as well as the top launch of Y 2016 YTD.

Overseas, where it bowed last weekend

CA: Civil War took in another $220-M for a foreign take of $496.6-M and worldwide box office of $678-M after only 12 days in release. Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, Civil War is assured of becoming the 1st release of Y  2016 to top the $1-B mark at the worldwide box office.

The critically acclaimed superhero film continues Disney domination, between Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, The Jungle Book and Zootopia.

Costing $250-M to make, CA:Civil War is the 13th title in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film is being embraced by critics; it currently shows 91% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it also won over audiences, who gave it an A CinemaScore. And moviegoers under the age of 25 gave it an A+.

The tentpole skewed male (59%), with adults making up 69% of ticket buyers, followed by families (20%) and teens (11%).

Garry Marshall’s ensemble holiday comedy Mother’s Day got a boost from the holiday, and was up 7.6% in its 2nd frame, grossing $9-M for a domestic box office of $20.7-M. Open Road Films is releasing the movie, it place #3 at the weekend.

The Jungle Book, which remained a formidable force in its 4th frame, grossing $21.9-M for a domestic take of $285-M. Internationally, it grossed another $24.1-M finishing Sunday with a foreign box office of $491.2-M. Worldwide, Jon Favreau’s film has grossed $776.2-M.

Universal’s, a unit of Comcast (NASDAQ:CMCSA), The Huntsman: Winter’s War followed at # 4, but continued to fall steeply in North America, taking in $3.6-M in its 3rd frame for a domestic take of 40.4-M and overseas, grossing $105.9-M, but its global box office of $146.3-M is a major disappointment.

At the specialty box office

A Bigger Splash opened in 3 theaters in New York and Los Angeles, taking in a $100,000 for a location average of $22,000, the 2nd best of the weekend after Civil War ($43,017). The film, which debuted at the 2015 Venice Film Festival, stars Tilda Swinton, Matthias Schoernaerts, Ralph Fiennes and Dakota Johnson and is being released domestically by Fox Searchlight.

And a year after it won the Palme d’Or at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, Dheepan made its US theatrical debut on 2 screens in New York, grossing $22,760 for a location average of $11,380. IFC/Sundance Selects will open the drama in Los Angeles this coming weekend, and then keep expanding into other markets.
