Box Office: Chinese Movie Attendance Soaring This Year
China’s Y 2015 box office has already exceeded the Y2014 total of CNY 29.6-B (US$4.6-B).
Chinese cinemas had taken CNY 30-B by Sunday, 48.5% more than in the same frame last year, according to the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television (SARFT).
Chinese movies raked in CNY18-B, 60% of the take.
54 films have grossed more than CNY 100-M this year, with 5 of them earning more than CNY 1-B.
The figures are another installment in the success story of the Chinese film industry.
Box office exceeded CNY 20-B in 1-H, but the Summer season has been even more blockbusting. Domestic movies alone took in CNY 9.2-B from June to August, more than the CNY 9-B that domestic and foreign films took in June-August 2014.
July set a monthly box office record for the Chinese box office of CNY 5.5-B, more than the whole of Y 2008.
Chinese animation “Monkey King: Hero is Back” has taken in more than CNY 800-M since its release on 10 July, making it the highest-grossing animation in Chinese cinemas.
Live action animation “Monster Hunt,” the highest-grossing Chinese film of all time, has also pulled in a total box office of CNY 2.415-B as of Monday since its debut on 16 July. It is bound to take this year’s Top Spot from Hollywood blockbuster “Furious 7,” with CNY 2.426-B.
With another 4 months to go, box office for the full year is likely to surpass CNY 40-B, even at a conservatively estimated growth rate of CNY 2.5-B per month, SARFT said.
Stay tuned…
