Box Office: ‘Miracles From Heaven’ Opens To $18.6-M

‘Zootopia’ is now the most successful animated film of all time in China
Jennifer Garner’s faith-based film ‘Miracles From Heaven’ opens to a solid $18.6 million in the U.S. after rolling out midweek.
Lionsgate’s (NYSE:LGF), film adaptation The Divergent Series: Allegiant — Part 1 opened to a disappointing $29.1-M from 3,740 theaters at the North American box office.
Directed by Robert Schwentke, Allegiant cost $110-M to make and is the 2nd big-budget miss for Lionsgate this year after Gods of Egypt.
Zootopia held at #1 in its 3rd weekend running with a stellar $38-M domestically to jump the $200-M mark in North America. Overseas, it earned another $64.8-M to finish Sunday with a foreign take of $389.9-M and global box office of $591.7-M, grossing $173.4-M in China to become the most successful animated film of all time there.
This weekend’s other wide release was Miracles From Heaven, Sony’s (NYSE:SNE) faith-based offering starring Jennifer Garner and Queen Latifah. The movie received a A+ CinemaScore, delivered a strong 5-day debut of $18.6-M after opening in theaters Wednesday.
Directed by Mexican filmmaker Patricia Riggen, Miracles from Heaven is based on the memoir of the same name by Christy Beam, whose young daughter, played in the movie by Kylie Rogers, made a miraculous recovery from an incurable disease.
Miracles From Heaven came in #3 after Zootopia and Allegiant, followed by 10 Cloverfield Lane at # 4.
Superhero Deadpool rounded the Top 5 in its 6th frame with $8-M for a domestic box office total of $340.9-M to rank as the # 8 comic book adaptation of all time.
The Bronze, starring Melissa Rauch as a foul-mouthed former gymnast debuted more than a year ago at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival but delayed when Relativity Media found itself in financial crisis. Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions, which sold the movie to Relativity in the U.S., extracted the film, with sister company Sony Pictures Classics taking over distribution theaters.
The Bronze, playing in 1,167 theaters, grossed just $421,434 at the box office for a location average of $361, DOA.
At the specialty box office
Midnight Special, starring Michael Shannon and opening in 5 theaters. The movie opened to $185,000 for a respectable location average of $37,000.
