Brazil’s unemployment rate rose strongly in February and exceeded economists’ expectations, figures from the statistical office IBGE showed Wednesday.
The jobless rate for the six metropolitan areas surged to 8.2 percent from 7.6 percent in January. Economists had forecast a score of 8.1 percent. A year ago, the figure was 5.8 percent.
The number of unemployed increased 7.2 percent or by 136,000 persons month-on-month to 2 million.
Employment declined 1.9 percent or by 428,000 persons monthly to 22.6 million.
