Brazil’s unemployment rate climbed slightly in the fourth quarter, but marked the highest level in four years, statistical office IBGE said Tuesday.
The jobless rate rose to 9 percent from 8.9 percent in the third quarter. The latest rate was the highest since the series began in 2012, the agency said.
A year ago, the jobless rate was 6.5 percent.
For 2015, the unemployment rate was 8.5 percent versus 6.8 percent in 2014.
The number of unemployed was 9.1 million persons in the fourth quarter, which was higher by a record 40.8 percent or 2.6 million persons, from the same period the year before.
Employment declined 0.6 percent year-on-year or 600,000 persons to 92.3 million.
The unemployment rate for the 18-24 age group was 19.4 percent.
