German finance minister Wolfgang Schäuble has warned about the contagion effects of British referendum in Europe. He has been among the vocal opponents of Brexit and previously warned that Britain will not get a great trade deal if it goes out and there will be further negotiations over a current deal if voters choose the exit route.
Speaking to German Der Spiegel magazine, Mr. Schäuble said that he can’t rule out possibilities that similar votes could be held in other countries like Netherlands. This year in a referendum, voters of Netherlands already rejected an EU proposal of engagement with Ukraine.
He asked, “How would the Netherlands, which has traditionally been very closely allied with Britain, react, for example?”
While politicians of some member countries have called for more integration in the event of an exit by Britain, Mr. Schäuble said that Brexit should be seen as a warning and wake-up call to not to continue what has been done until now.
Latest polls have shown there are member countries where people are more hostile towards EU than Britons. According to Pew Research Center study, 71 percent in Greece, 61 percent in France, 49 percent in Spain, and even 48 percent in Germany have unfavorable views towards the European Union.
