According to reporting by Financial Times, European leaders are secretly drawing up their plan B, in the event of British exit from the Union. According to FT, leaders of European Union and their key aides have met recently in Hanover, Rome and Brussels to discuss over life after Brexit and to prevent contagion from British exit from the Union. France and Germany are pushing towards closer integration of European Union.
The leaders have already scheduled a meeting for June 28-29 to decide their response to Brexit and if Britain will choose to leave, it won’t be invited.
France is particularly worried over the contagion effects of Brexit on other states and fear that it may fuel further rise of Eurosceptic, even at home. Euro-skeptic, National Front, led by Marine La Pen has done well in recent election.
Two area of major concerns have been trade deal and success after Brexit. EU can’t hand over Britain a good trade deal as it may attract other members to follow and if Britain prosper outside EU, some fear it may call end of the union.
Some prominent members such as European commission’s President Jen Claude Juncker and European Central Bank President Mario Draghi believes EU should go for more integration upon Brexit, Euro group finance chair Jeroen Dijsselbloem thinks that if Brexit is a vote against Europe, it doesn’t make sense to respond with more integration.
